I don't know why these projects enthrall me so much. But I love to see these kind of applications written purely in .Net and managed code. It is so much cleaner than wrapping unmanaged code or call to the os.

This reminded me of the book The Cricket in Times Square (http://www.mce.k12tn.net/reading24/cricket_in_Times_Square.htm). I would love to see a whale sometime. From the article:
“...Just think, just miles from the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Carnegie Hall and Times Square, the great whales are singing,"

Here is an application that I have been using for a while with itunes:

I wanted the buttons on the front of my laptop to control itunes. I guess that is not something itunes supports very well. So I found this little tool and it's written in .Net too!

Financial Freedom for the Christian Family
Bob Vallier
http://www.bobvallier.com/table%20of%20contents.htm
There is a lot of good information in this book and most of it is free on his web site. Because I read everything on this topic that I can, I have heard most of this already. Actually putting this knowledge into practice is another thing all together.
I did learn 2 distinct things:
1.Saving Strategy (pg. 76)
The author had a staircase of things that should be done to save well. This is one instance that you should not skip steps or take them two at a time.
Step 1 – Eliminate all High Interest Debt. (Credit cards, Loans, etc..)
Step 2 – Start an Emergency fund and leave it alone (1-2 months ready cash)
Step 3 – Start an Education Fund for your Children (Coverdell or 529)
Step 4 – Long Term Savings Strategy (410K, 403b, IRA, etc..)
Step 5 – Set a goal to pay off your house
Step 6 – Start an auto replacement fund (Set a car payment aside monthly for a few years and let the interest

There are a lot of tools for .Net and several for compact framework and mobile, but this trace for mobile looks really nice. It is a free tool that operates by injecting extra code into existing .NET CF files after they have been compiled.

Friday Fish Post: Researchers track cool-water habits of Willamette fish
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/09/researchers_track_coolwater_ha.html
From the article:
“Researchers have realized that water winding through the network of channels also passed underground through gravel and sand in what is known as hyporheic flow. The flow is a natural form of refrigeration because the water cools as it passes through the ground. “
“Studies have found that migrating fish duck into such water to cool themselves before racing through warmer stretches. “
That is so cool! Sorry for the pun I couldn't help it.

I knew it would come eventually. A way for virtual worlds to be accessed on the go makes for some interesting cross-over between virtual and real world.

DocBook 5.0: The Definitive Guide
http://www.docbook.org/tdg5/
A brief book and certainly not up to the quality of a normal O'Reilly book. I think there is more information in the older versions of the book. I noticed that OpenOffice writer outputs to docbook version 4.1.2 from the website: There are no official XML versions of DocBook prior to V4.1.2 . DocBook V4.5 is an OASIS Standard.
The 4.5 version is much more robust (http://www.docbook.org/tdg/en/html/) this is the released version of Docbook that I should use.
Don't want DSSSL because it seems too SGML for me. Want to use XSL, but can't find the xsl that matches with Docbook 4.5???
Finally found the xsl release here (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=21935) and tried it with fop.
Finally after much turmoil I have decided to use ant. Ant is great and there is a style task for transforms and a fop task so it should have all I need.
