I have read Eric Sink’s wonderful articles on MSDN, but I had no idea how this term had taken off. As an APress author, I was VERY surprised to see this book sneak by: Micro-ISV: From Vision to Reality. I hear about this on the Channel 9 MicroISV Podcast. Michael G. Lehman has had interesting podcasts even before he went to Microsoft. He is an Evangelist for MicroISVs for MS. Here is the blog for the book: http://mymicroisv.com/.
I also ran across an interview with Joel Spolsky on Venture Voices podcast. I greatly respect Joel and Eric and love the questions they are willing to answer. I haven’t listened to all the Venture Voice podcasts yet but I also really enjoyed the one with Fabrice Grinda. Fabrice has developed a 9 Business Selection Criteria for staring businesses that we all can learn from!
Great stuff for a geek trying to start a company!!!!

I like the idea of sharing code in a community setting. I do believe it should be moderated and inspected to see the code is quality versus quantity. We should be able to search on this (like google) and check out http://www.koders.com/ and http://krugle.com/.
MSDN released some code snippets that I hadn’t seen before.
The best community site I have seen is http://www.gotcodesnippets.com/. Go in peace. Just remember to give as much as you take.

I was looking for a study I read a while ago on a popular cryptographic discussion: key length. As Bruce Schneier points out this is a real problem.
I remember this mathematical article was hard to find; so, I was all set to spend 30 minutes googling for it. Then I had the bright idea of searching for key length and I found a great site on it:
http://www.keylength.com/
This site points to the study I read and updates to it since.

I didn’t even know that this existed! It is extremely helpful to see the areas of your code that were tested. I am working on a NCover / CC.Net implementation right now. Visual indication of code tested is supported by VSTS but I am glad it showed up in TestDriven too! This is also being implemented in SharpDevelop.

Microsoft Money 2006 |

The whole reason I bought Microsoft Money 2006 was to sync my data with my PPC6700, after all the Pocket PC version of Microsoft Money is free. I was using a 2 year old version of Quicken and I needed to upgrade anyway. I bought the software and part of it downloaded. I immediately looked for the import from Quicken option which I assumed had to exist. I couldn’t find it. Then I got a message saying the full product (which I was already using) was downloaded and installed. Then I saw the option:
Microsoft even advertises the PocketPC version like no other product they have (except Streets & Trips):
I downloaded the CAB file and installed it. But I didn’t get the shortcut link to run it because I chose the installation option to install it on the storage card. This also caused the today plugin to not work.
On first open, it said to sync first if using the desktop version.
So I turned to activesync and the sync of the data. I saw it in the list and configured it:

I noticed that I have posted a lot of negative posts lately. Do not let this fool you. The Sprint PPC 6700 is the best phone on the planet. LockerGnome definitely agrees.
Here are things they got right.
-The battery life is better in Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 and persistent storage is a must!
-Receiving an email over EVDO is seamless and easy to use. Eat your heart out BlackBerry
-Charging over USB. I only need to carry this one cable and I can charge to any PC at my clients office.
-USB 2.0 for MUCH faster file copying.
-Getting a phone call while listening to podcasts. This has never given me an error at all. The music fades the phone call happens the music resumes. No problem. I really thought they would get it wrong like the iPod killer rumor. Glad I was wrong.
-One handed use is great
I have blogged a little about the multi-use joystick thingy on the PPC6700. Here are some apps that make use of the joystick.

WIFI on 6700 not so important? |

One of the original reasons I chose the 6700 was because it had WIFI built in. I figured I would save mega-minutes on my cellular bill by using WIFI when I could and limiting the EVDO time. But with Sprints wonderful data plan EVDO is only $15 a month and has pretty good coverage. EVDO is more reliable and faster anyway. Maybe the Treo 700w had the right Idea, but the wrong price point on the data plan?

6700 Keyboard update |

The keyboard on my 6700 is a getting a little loose. I still love it for email though. The other day I watched James’ video review of the Treo 700w. I really like the ways to do contact searching on the Treo 700w using the keyboard one handed! Because the 6700’s keyboard is not conducive to one-handed, easily available use for phone calls I can not do this on my phone. Now this may be moot if Microsoft’s Voice Command would have come installed on the Sprint PPC6700 (like it does on most other carriers) and would work with Bluetooth headsets on Windows Mobile 5.
On a different related note I had lunch with Michael Gough. He gave me a copy of his excellent Skype book. I hear him over on the Computer Outlook on 01/13/06.
Guess what he had the 6700 from Verizon! I know that Verizon has eliminated the tethering, but they also do not allow the WIFI and the phone on at the same time! So if you are using WIFI then your phone calls go directly to voicemail. I tried this on my Sprint unit and I can use
